Tropical Plants and Orchids

Bromeliads

Bromeliad assortments

We offer bromeliads specially selected for their small size and suitability for dart frogs.  Most varieties of bromeliads get too large for the average terrarium, and it can be difficult to find smaller varieties. We have a nice variety, primarily Neoregalias, which are especially prone to producing pups(offsets produced by the parent plant).

Bromeliads are hardy plants that thrive in terrarium conditions, but do require fairly high light levels, and placement in areas of the tank that get the best light. If you need something for moderate light levels let us know when you place your order, we generally have a variety or two that will tolerate somewhat lower light levels.

Indicate preferences regarding terrestrial or epiphytic types and sizes in the message box when you are filling out your order, we will do out best to accommodate your needs!

Tillandsia, or airplants as they are often known, are part of the same family as bromeliads, but are adapted to live in dryer conditions. In smaller terrariums they don't typically do well, but if you have a larger terrarium, particularly one with some fans for air movement, and good strong lighting, they will often do well. We offer selected varieties that are more likely to do well in the higher humidity of a terrarium.

Epiphytic Orchids

We have a variety of epiphytic orchids, primarily Central American species, of the Pleurothallid family, suited for terrarium use. These are small orchids, ranging from about the size of your thumb to the size of your hand. All are well suited for mounting on the back wall of the tank, and should thrive on your tanks back wall!

Good size divisions ready for mounting are $17.50 each.

Mounting supplies and instructions are included in each order.

Moss

Right now we are offering a beautiful type of moss known as pillow moss. It tends to be in small to medium size clumps, ranging from 3 to 7 or 8 inch mounds, circular in shape, which are tallest in the middle. It does well in terrariums, but like all moss I have tried, it does best on surfaces which get good light and excellent drainage! I recommend using this moss as an accent, not a “carpet”. If you will take a few pieces and place them around the tank, you will find some spots it thrives in. Moss will do best on spots where it receives good light, and good drainage. The spots in my tanks it has done best in are on surfaces like corkbark that is leaning up against a back wall.

1 square foot bag $12

3 square feet $32

Plant shipping charges and methods

Most plants will be shipped via Fed Ex Second day service. The charge for this will be between $12 and $17, depending on whether the order will be shipped in one of our small boxes, or if a larger box is required. Most smaller orders will be shipped in the small box, for instance a tropical plant assortment would easily fit in the small box. Many of the smaller dry goods can also be packed with your plants.

During particularly mild times of the year, customers in the Midwest may be able to receive a lower shipping rate if I can ship your order through Fed Ex's ground service. This would typically result in a five to ten dollar savings. Let us know when you order that you would like ground shipping if you think the weather is appropriate and if you live within about six hundred miles of St. Louis. If I feel it would be unsafe I will let you know.

During winter months, heat packs may be used, and the customer will be charged one dollar per heat pack, typically only one for smaller orders.

Plants are guaranteed only when shipped to areas that are above freezing at night, and when temperatures here are also above freezing. During summer months, live plant arrival is only guaranteed when temperatures are below 90 for the day time high at both the customers location and here in St. Louis. I will assume that any orders received when temps are outside of these parameters are placed with the knowledge that there is no guarantee of live arrival. Other services, such as overnight shipping, and heavier packing can be used if you are interested, email or call if you would like to discuss getting your plants safely during times when the live arrival guarantee is not in place.
