Epipedobates tricolor is another complex of frog morphs, which are scattered across Ecuador and Peru. They are all smaller frogs, most just under one inch in length, and for the most part are similar in appearance, having a burgundy to brown background and white, blue or greenish stripes running down the flanks.

These frogs have been in the hobby for years, and were common when I first started keeping frogs. In fact the first tank of frogs I ever had was a trio of tricolor given to me by a friend of a friend, who had to get rid of them due to a move. This was in 1991. This tank of frogs was some of the very first herps I kept as an adult, and also some of the first animals I ever bred. They were prolific breeders, laying large clutches of eggs regularly.

This species of frogs is one of the best known cases of frog poisons being used in medicine. The poison of this frog, called epibatidine, has been synthesized and is currently being tested for use as a morphine substitute in human medicine. It appears to be non addictive, and so far seems to be a very promising powerful pain killer.

This frog is an outstanding terrarium subject, especially for someone who wants an interesting show, from more than just another pretty face! These frogs are very interesting to observe in a group setting, so if you have a terrarium somewhere that you would be able to watch regularly during the day, these frogs should offer some good entertainment! In addition they have a lovely trill, which is loud enough to be heard for several feet outside the tank.
