Winter of 2010
In this space I try to offer a fairly updated discussion of the captive bred offspring that are available at this time, as well as any new information about dry goods, shipping, and projects which are coming to fruition! This text area is a general overview, followed by the more frequently updated table at the bottom of the page, which shows each species or form that we have in “production” right now, as well as their prices. Just scroll down for this table.
Please note that there are several other areas on the website for you to find information about the frogs, such as the species list , where you can find some pictures of the different frogs we offer, and specific information about them. We also have a large selection of caresheets which cover many topics related to dart frogs. I feel that there is enough information presented in these caresheets to get you started with dart frogs, so please try to find the answers to your questions in these locations before contacting me!
You may have questions about how we ship our frogs, if so you can check out the “Animal Shipping and Live Arrival Guarantee” page, which covers terms and conditions, as well as information about how we ship our frogs and lizards.
The New Site!
We have been offering a variety of terrarium supplies and fruit flies, for years, but our shopping cart system was old and outdated, and not very easy to use. Our new site is much more user friendly, and will make it easier for us to keep it updated. Enjoy!
New Frog Pricing!
Over the years we have built a reputation for offering larger frogs than most other vendors, and our large one inch juvenile dart frogs have helped many a beginner get off to successful start. However more and more vendors are offering frogs at lower prices, and we felt it was necessary to change things around a little bit. So, while we will continue to offer the larger juvenile frogs, we decided to also begin offering a smaller size dart frog, which we are calling an “Established Juvenile”. These frogs are about three quarters of an inch, and ten to twelve weeks old, although age is less important than size! These are not the little half inch six week old froglets you may see offered by others, these are little fatties! However I do still recommend the “Large Juveniles” size, especially if you are a beginner. In fact, if you are looking for savings, I would go so far as to recommend you save money by getting less frogs, rather than getting the smaller frogs!
We also often have larger frogs in the pipeline, so we have added a third category to the selection, that being the “Half Grown or Larger” dart frogs. These large frogs are ready to go into your terrarium! Visit our online store to see what we have in stock!
Terrariums and Supplies
Our new site features a variety of great new products, in particular in the area of terrarium construction. We've added numerous products to make the construction of your terrarium easy, whether its your first or fifth!
Check out the many new items, including our complete terrarium kits for ten and twenty gallon tanks, new lighting kits, a variety of new tree fern products, and new supplements.
Of course many items return from our old site, including our Rock Water Fall kit, which has been sold to several dozen customers, including several zoos and institutions, with generally great reviews. The kit features a cast background with the look of real rock. The background has a water fall, and comes with everything you need to set up a tank. The kit is made with the Exo Terra and Zoo Med tanks in mind, but can go in any tank that is at least 17 inches high and 17 inches wide....
DartFrogs
Of course, while terrarium supplies are an important side business for us, our main focus is on our effort to provide you with as wide a selection of dart frogs as possible, at a fair price. Maintaining and breeding this wide variety of frogs is a fairly time consuming job, and this is our true passion here.
We've had a pretty good spring and summer breeding season, and our inventory is on the rise, and we have a lot of frogs that are coming out of the water. Availability should continue to be pretty good through the winter, and into spring.
Sexed Pairs
We are using the new site to showcase our sexed pairs- as time permits we will post photos of these pairs in our online store , so you will be able to pick out a pair you like. This is the perfect way for beginners to get started in the hobby, and its a great way for anyone to add a potential breeding pair to their frog collection.
However due to the time involved in getting pictures and posting them, only a fraction of the pairs we have available will make it to the store, so below is a list of the potential sexed pairs we have available now.
- Tinctorius "Azureus"
- Tinctorius "Surinam Cobalts"
- Tinctorius "Patricia"
- Tinctorius "PowderBlue"
- Auratus "Panamanian Green and Bronze"
- Auratus "Ancon Hill"
- Auratus "Campana"
- Imitator
- Imitator Tarapoto
- Imitator Intermedius
- Lamasi Orange
- Ventrimaculatus grey leg

D. auratus
There are lots of good things going on with auratus right now. We have a good “crop” of Green and Bronzes available now, and we also have some older frogs which are sexable, these can make a great instant breeding project!
There are plenty of Costa Rican green and blacks also available, looks like we should have a good supply for the foreseeable future. A handful are getting up to adult size so some sexed pairs are going to be available over the next couple of months.
We also have a few Ancon Hill auratus that are ready, as well as sexed pairs of these frogs. These smaller auratus are nice for keeping in groups, especially if you are short on room!
Another form of auratus that we have available currently are Campanas. These Campana are an unusually patterned and colored Panamanian form of auratus, with a dark brown background and a creamy white reticulation on them. They are truly remarkable looking frog! As usual with these sorts of auratus they are a bit shy.
We have quite a few nice blue and black auratus. These are always favorites, and while they are a bit shyer than some of the other forms of auratus, they do well in groups, and are highly recommended!
We’ve had a lot of interest in our blue and bronzes, but unfortunately over the past year, most of the blue and bronzes we have produced have been small and have failed to thrive. We will keep trying, but I am not holding my breath!
D. galactonotus
At this time we have some red galactonotus tadpoles and the froglets are coming out at a steady rate as well. We are filling orders on the wait list for this frog, but it’s a long list. It is very hard to forecast how long these lists will take, but we are going as fast as we can! Right now we are shipping frogs out for people who requested them about a year ago.
We had a rather unsuccessful breeding season with the
We produced a small number of the solid orange galactonotus this past year, and hope to get them going again. These are a very nice frog, and quite rare, sure would be nice to get them going this year!
Phyllobates
We have a nice batch of P. vittatus out of the water, they are just hitting shipping size….not much going on with the other Phyllobates at the moment though.
D. leucomelas
This summer our leucomelas really let loose! We have several unrelated pairs, and we should have a good supply of these frogs this winter, with occasional offerings of larger or sexed frogs also. These are one of the best all around terrarium frogs, colorful, bold, compatible in groups, loud pleasant call….what more could you want?
Tinctorius and Azureus
Right now we have quite a few D. tinctorius forms available. We have a few
The tinctorius group usually provides a few sexed pairs of sub adult and adults, in particular we do our best to always have sexed pairs of D. azureus available. We are back in pretty good form on this count, and will also be offering pairs of
Thumbnail frogs
First a note on taxonomy, the majority of the thumbnail frogs popular in the hobby have been reclassified from Dendrobates to Ranitomeya. These frogs are still considered dart frogs, and this change simply reflects further clarification of the Dendrobates family tree. We will update the individual frogs pages with this information as we get around to it!
A few bright spots here with our thumbnail frog projects. R. imitator are doing fairly well, and we have a few frogs ready to ship every few weeks. We also have some R. imitator intermedius that are ready for shipping as well.
Another species of interest is the imitator "Tarapoto". We have a pair here that produces some melanistic offspring, while I don't think they are as beautiful as the normal form, they are very unusual. Contact us if you are interested in these....the same pair produces some normal offspring as well, we usually have a few of each available.
We have a couple of new species that haven’t been added to the frog listing as of yet, we will try to get a page posted for each of these new species soon. First is the R. variabilis. A very interesting frog, considered to be the frog that R. imitator imitates in their shared range. Very similar in appearance to imitators, but more closely related to R. ventrimaculatus. Slightly larger and brighter in appearance than imitators, and nearly as bold. One of the best features of this frog is that it is much more tolerant of being kept in groups, as is the case with many ventrimaculatus group frogs, so its possible to set up four unsexed young frogs in a tank and not have to worry about them killing each other! We have quite a few of these that are ready to ship. In addition there are some sexed pairs that will be available on these frogs.
We’ve also added a couple of pairs of Lowland R. fantasticus to the thumbnail frogs we work with. These are awesome frogs, and very variable in appearance. Shy and fast, but very beautiful. Inquire on availability and pricing.
Pumilio
First a note on taxonomy, the entire tribe of “obligate eggfeeders” (species like pumilio, histrionica, and granulifera among others) have been reclassified from Dendrobates to Oophaga. These frogs are still considered “dart frogs”, and this change simply reflects further clarification of the Dendrobates family tree.
Currently we have a few of the Bastimentos form pumilio ready to go, and I anticipate that this will continue. Mostly reds or orange bastis, but I am sure we will have a few yellows as well.We are also producing a few Cayo Nancy pumilio. These frogs are simply stunning, with a solid red body and some white on the feet.
Other Frogs
Occasionally we dabble in frog species other than dart frogs. Right now the only side project we have that is producing are the Solomon Isle Leaf frogs, Ceratobatrachus guentheri. Currently we have a good number of larger frogs ready to go, mostly the paler yellows. Many of these are over half grown, although I don’t think its possible to sex them just yet. There are also a few smaller ones, just getting up to shipping size now.
Wanted
This is a new feature, please look this over if you have surplus frogs available. We are looking for the following types of frogs. We will pay cash, or trade for other frogs or terrarium supplies.
In addition to the frogs listed below, we are interested in purchasing or trading for any frogs we do not have on our “Currently Available” listing.
Phyllobates terribilis Mint Adults or Juveniles
Male Yellow back D. tinctorius
R. reticulatus
Red Galactonotus males
Matecho Tinctorius
Lorenzo Tinctorius
French Guiana Cobalt tinctorius Males
Dart Frog Availability at a glance, January 2010
The purpose of this table is to allow you to see what frogs are available now, and what might be available in the near future. Note that the froglets too small to ship and the tadpoles are listed for informational purposes, we do not sell tadpoles or baby frogs.
Frogs listed as ready to go are well established juveniles, in most cases one inch in length and three to five months old. The one inch standard applies to the tinctorius, auratus and other larger dart frogs in particular, obviously many of the other frogs are too small as adults for this to apply.
